  2. anything is a complete red herring. It doesn‚Äôt give 
  3. the nature of the medium itself or its effects. In 
  4. fact, the content of any medium is always an older 
  5. medium, as my father showed over and over again. 
  6. And by the time you put something inside another 
  7. situation you change its properties. By the time 
  8. you put, let‚Äôs say, a novel or an opera on film, as 
  9. film it doesn‚Äôt have the effect of an opera which is 
  10. performed on a stage with a live audience and so 
  11. on. Or as film, the novel doesn‚Äôt have the effect of 
  12. the book, it has now the effect of film. And it 
  13. changes people and uses them according to the 
  14. dictates of the film medium, not according to the
